The Saints go marching on

Newly crowned Westmeath champions St Loman’s and experienced Roscommon kingpins St Brigid’s both got their respective provincial campaign off to a winning start last weekend. Following their five-point win over reigning champions Mullingar Shamrocks last weekend it is Tyrrellspass who will square up to St Loman’s in this year’s senior county final which is down for decision this Sunday.

Confusion cleared as business end of championship begins

It certainly has been an action-packed if somewhat confusing week on the football front in Westmeath. In a typical case of Murphy’s law a bizarre set of results left three teams: Garrycastle, Tyrrellspass, and Castledaly, all on six points fighting for two knockout places in section B.

Saints lay down a marker

Having flagged the possibility of an upset here last week little did I think that St Loman’s would overturn Garrycastle in such convincing fashion. Their 10 point win over the men from the south of the county is undoubtedly the talking point after round 2 of the senior club championship. Write Garrycastle off at your peril though. When their injuries clear up I feel they will still have a big say in the outcome of this year’s championship. It does however show how vulnerable they are when a few of their more seasoned campaigners are absent which has to be a major worry from their point of view.
